hi everyone! welcome to the mid year freak out book tag : 2020 edition! no one actually tagged me to do this, but i figured it’d be a fun way to see my reading progress in the first half of 2020. also, it helps me to make my end-of-year recap, so here we go :
1. BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020
i read quite a lot of great books this year, so it’s hard to choose one, but if i have to i’ll pick Harley in the Sky by Akemi Dawn Bowman. it’s my second Bowman’s books, and it has everything i love–from self-realization journey to (kinda) slow-burn romance. the circus setting also made this book more magical.
2. BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ IN 2020
The Wicked King by Holly Black, no doubt about it. i think it’s the best books in the series, especially because of the plot and twist (eventhough technically i rated The Queen of Nothing higher, but that’s only because it has a lot of Jude/Cardan scenes).
3. NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT WANT TO
i’ve heard a lot of great things about A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown, so i’m really excited to read that one! based on the summary, it has an intriguing plot and enemies-to-lovers trope, so i think i’ll love that one.
4. MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF 2020
i couldn’t possibly list one book for this category (i even made a whole post for it), so here’s some of them :
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong (romeo/juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai and featuring gangster!!)
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco (it’s about witches, but i’m mostly interested with the romance which feature enemies-to-lovers)
Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles (magical circus!!)
5. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
i’ve got to say What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter. this book is about a book blogger, so i’m excited for it. sadly, i end up mostly annoyed with the main character and the romance (where the MC is basically lying to the love interest throughout the book). for the record, i read this book as an audiobook, which i think isn’t the right format since it has text messages, blog post, etc. so it’s kinda confusing for me.
6. BIGGEST SURPRISE
i found Songs from the Deep by Kelly Powell through scribd’s recommendation, and i end up liking it! despite being murder mystery, this book has some sort of enchanting atmosphere in it. also, it features a slytherin-girl/hufflepuff-boy romance, which is something i didn’t know i need ❤
7. FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR (DEBUT OR NOT)
i finally read one of Elizabeth Acevedo‘s book this year, Clap When You Land. i’ve heard great things about The Poet X and With the Fire On High, so i’m glad i end up enjoying it. Elizabeth’s writing is quite poetic and yet easy to understand. also, i 100% recommend the audiobook! definitely the best audiobook i’ve heard.
8. NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH
this is probably the hardest question here since i usually like almost all the love interest in a book (unless i hate the book), but some that stood out for me are Kai from Summer Bird Blue, Lucky from Chasing Lucky, and Jonah from When We Collided.
9. NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTERS
can i say the entire gang from The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi? i recently read this book and i really, really love the characters. Severin, Laila, Enrique, Zofia, Tristan, and Hypnos are wonderful and they always support and complement each other. definitely one of the best book featuring found-family trope.
10. BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY
i’m pretty sure none of the books i’ve read so far made me cry, but When We Collided by Emery Lord is a close one! when i finished the book, i literally had to lay on my bed for a moment to process it all. this book is quite heavy since it talks about loss and also mental illness (especially bipolar disorder), and yet i think it made this book feels real.
11. BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY
i think most books made me happy, but Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett made me happier than most. maybe because i just love any book by Jenn Bennett (this is the fifth one!), or maybe because the romance in this book is just A++.
12. MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOKS YOU’VE BOUGHT SO FAR THIS YEAR (OR RECEIVED)
definitely The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu! the cover is just sooo pretty. to be honest, if it wasn’t because of the cover (and the fact that one of my favorite author wrote this), i don’t think i’ll buy this book since the plot doesn’t sound like something i usually read. but i’m excited to ‘branch out’ of my usual genre, and i hope i like this one.
13. BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR
i’m planning to tackle some books from my shelf, and hopefully i actually do it this time : Wicked Fox by Kat Cho, Rebel and The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu, Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare and Legendary by Stephanie Garber are some of them.
what about you? what’s the best books you’ve read so far in 2020? and if you’ve read any of the books mentioned above, what do you think of it?
