because i just can’t pick one book, i’ll choose one for each genre i read the most so far : fantasy and contemporary. in fantasy, the best book i’ve read is The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black. i’ll admit, this book isn’t perfect and clearly too simple for an ending of a trilogy, but it also give all the feels™ so i love it enough to give it 5 stars. for contemporary, my favorite so far is Harley in the Sky by Akemi Dawn Bowman. the story, the relationship, and even the circus setting are just so perfect ❤
i’ve heard lots of great things about Elizabeth Acevedo’s books, but i finally realized why when i read Clap When You Land. her writing is so lyrical and poetic, and the way she narrates the audiobook? it’s magical. everyone should’ve listened to audiobook narrated by her at least once.
i recently read Songs from the Deep by Kelly Powell, and honestly i wouldn’t know this book if not because of scribd’s recommendation. it’s basically a murder-mystery set in a small island, complete with a hauntingly-beautiful atmosphere. this book has similar vibes with the scorpio races (which i love!), so if you love that one definitely read this one!
i wouldn’t say i hate Roseblood by A. G. Howard, but if wasn’t on sale (and that beautiful cover!) i don’t think i’ll buy this one. i thought phantom of the opera was kinda creepy, so i wasn’t that interested in reading this book. as it turns out, i end up giving it 5 stars because roseblood is just beautiful (and definitely better than the original phantom of the opera, in my opinion).
can i say Percy Jackson series for this? percy jackson played a huge role in making me the reader that i am today. it was one of the very first book that got me into reading. looking back, i couldn’t believe it’s been 7-8 years since i read it. that’s why, in some ways, reading percy jackson feels like coming back home.
i love the sibling relationship in When We Collided by Emery Lord. jonah, one of the main character, has 5 siblings and each of them are equally wonderful. this book portray their siblings’s relationship after their father’s death, so it is pretty sad, but i love how they got each other’s backs.
i feel like time move slowly (read : i’m quite bored) when i read Meet Me at Midnight by Jessica Pennington. this book has such a great premise (hate-to-love and summer rivalries!), but sadly i think the execution fell flat. it took me a long time to finish this. there were some moments i still enjoy, though, so i end up giving it 3 stars.
i think a lot of books fit into this category but i’m gonna choose Descendant of the Crane by Joan He because that book is just awesome!! it’s been more than a year since i read it so obviously i need to re-read it soon. i’m still hoping that Joan He will write a sequel for it.
it’s pretty hard to pick one, but i’m gonna choose Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett. i love Bennett’s contemporary, but so far none of them beat alex, approximately (i think i’ve read this book 3 times?). i just really really love it, so i wouldn’t mind being marooned on an island with it ❤
based on the praise lots of bloggers have given to A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown, i think it’s safe to assume i’ll give that book 5 stars. the world-building itself sounds interesting, and not to mention the enemies-to-lovers trope!! also bonus point for the beautiful cover ❤ i can’t wait to read this book.
there are lots of books i’m dying to read now, but if i have to choose one i’ll pick Loveless by Alice Oseman, simply because it has an ownvoices aro/ace rep ❤ i’ve been waiting for this book since it was announced and i’m very excited for it (less than one month to go!)
technically, the entire book community convinced me to read The Seven Husband of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins-Reid. not gonna lie, i wouldn’t pick it up if it weren’t for the hype, so i’m glad you’re all hyping this book. Evelyn’s stories are amazing and heart-breaking at the same time.
the first book that came to my mind when i heard the word ‘funniest’ is obviously percy jackson, but My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brodi Ashton is a close second! that book is just so funny, that sometimes i re-read parts of it when i need some cheer up. not to mention, the story is interesting as well, so please read this book if you haven’t.
i read Legend by Marie Lu back when i started blogging (in 2014), and to this day it’s still one of my favorite series. the setting, the angst, and the plotline are just A++. i think legend series is Marie Lu’s best work and i’m never bored reading it.
when i read Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim, i was afraid to reach the end–partly because i have a feeling it’ll end with a cliffhanger, and partly because i just didn’t want this beautiful book to end. it’s such a mesmerizing and captivating book that i can’t get enough of. just less than a month until the sequel is released! ❤
i realize that All for the Game by Nora Sakavic has some problematic aspects in it, and definitely not for everyone due to its long list of trigger warning, but for some reason this series captivate me. i picked this book mostly out of curiosity, but it’s so interesting that i end up finishing the entire series just in a few days.
A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas, no doubt about it. this book is the reason why i most likely won’t read another sarah j. maas’s books. it’s basically a (quite badly written) fanfiction that i (stupidly) bought at regular paperback price, so until now i’m still salty about it. the only thing i liked from this book is the cover, which i thought was the best from this series.
i generally love the romance in every book i enjoyed, but until this day there’s only two ships that made me want to read every single fanfiction i could find : Percy and Annabeth from Percy Jackson (duh!) and Will and Tessa from The Infernal Devices. maybe because back then my TBR pile wasn’t as huge as now, but almost every night i read fanfictions about those ships. i’m just that obsessed with them. i also love the romance in The Dark Days Club series by Alison Goodman. i might even say that so far it has the best slow-burn romance i’ve ever read. forever wishing that there’s more books in this series!
have you read any of these books? did you love any of them? and most importantly, have you read percy jackson??
